What does your Short add that a viewer could not get from the source clip alone? That question became more pressing after YouTube’s October 1, 2026 announcement that it is updating Shorts recommendations to give greater priority to original content and reduce the reach of low-value reuploads.

The change YouTube described

In its TeamYouTube update, the platform says channels that mainly aggregate or reupload other creators’ videos without significant changes may receive less distribution in the Shorts feed. It encourages a distinct voice, perspective and storytelling rather than minor technical or template changes. The announcement does not provide a fixed percentage of new footage that guarantees recommendation eligibility.

Make the contribution visible in the idea

For a creator reviewing existing work, start with the concept before looking at the edit. Can you describe the question your video answers? Is your explanation central to the experience, or could it be removed without changing much?

A useful contribution might be a demonstration you filmed, a comparison based on criteria you explain or a story that brings a new connection into focus. If a video relies on a clip as an example, let the surrounding work explain why that example matters. Decorative captions or a different playback speed do not by themselves give the audience a new reason to watch.

Use a simple pre-publication review

Watch the video once as someone who has never seen your profile. Note where your own idea becomes clear. If that moment arrives late, try a more direct opening. Show the problem, state the question or introduce the observation before the viewer has to infer your purpose.

Keep the materials you created organized so you can reuse your own production work deliberately. A recurring format can make filming and editing easier while still leaving room for a new example, result or point of view in each episode.

When reviewing performance, compare similar original formats over time rather than treating one slow upload as a diagnosis of the entire channel. Look at the explanation, audience fit and viewing behavior together. A recommendation update is not a promise that every original video will find a large audience.

The most useful response is a stronger creative brief: make something that clearly belongs to your account, answers a specific need and gives viewers a reason to choose your version of the story.
